Newcomer Health and Wellness Program Initiated to Help the Immigrants Feel Settled

If you are emotionally and mentally healthy, then your effectiveness and productivity will improve.  Mental health is highly important at every stage of life as it helps us determine how we can relate to others and make choices. The COVID 19 time has mostly made us examine the importance of a sound mind and a healthy body. With this concept in mind, an Ontario-based company has placed a lot of importance on Newcomers' holistic mental health services in Canada.

Immigration funds the Newcomer Health and Wellness Program, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and the proposed fund is CAD 2.2 million. The program is designed so that the needs of the newcomers can be met in a personalized manner.

The Canadian Mental Health Association in the York Region & South Simcoe (CMHA-YRSS), which is a branch of a national non-profit organization in the Greater Toronto Area, is backing up this new initiative. It is focused on improving mental health and well-being for all those immigrants who are above 12 years of age.

As per the current research of Statistics Canada, when the immigrants come to Canada, then they are very vulnerable, and this program will help create a "healthy immigrant effect." An immigrant feels vulnerable owing to language barriers, cultural differences, and shift of place.   This can lead to stress, anxiety, panic attack, depression.

There are settlement agencies who aim to provide the mental health care needed by the newcomers who face these challenges but unfortunately, most of the time, the immigrant is not aware of such support services. The new CMHA-YRSS program is designed to help address these information gaps.

CMHA-YRSS program offers a broad range of services like health and wellness promotion and training, family counselings, personalized counselling, therapy, Outdoor activities, and Trauma specific care.  The idea is to provide immigrants with a safe and healthy atmosphere.

CMHA-YRSS program considers that there are a diverse set of people, and all of them have their special needs and different coping mechanisms. Thus the background is considered before any help is offered to them. Hence, there is culturally appropriate mental health awareness, which is the key to a successful program.  There have been three years of funding for the project already, and there is also a possibility of a two-year extension.

Looking at the high emphasis paid on all newcomers' physical and mental health, the measures of the Canada Government look promising in heling applicants lead a meaningful and successful life in Canada.
